Tweet Coding

20 02 2009

Yesterday, Grant Skinner (creator of the awesome GTween library) came up with a competition for all those AS3 developers out there. The aim? Make something funky in 140 characters or less using the “gimme” code provided on: http://gskinner.com/playpen/tweetcoding.html

Within a few hours, there were some amazing tweets submitted, some of which just blow my mind. All submissions can be found here. One of my current favourites is this one of a tree, which is just brilliant!

Needless to say, I couldn’t resist the challenge, so have created Painted Rain, which is _supposed_ to look like drops of paint falling into water and blending together. Was really tough to do in 140 characters! Here’s the link to the swf, and the code:

h=r();l=600;o[i++]={a:h*l,b:r()*l,c:h*30,d:h*1e7};g.clear();for each(e in o){g.beginFill(e.d,20/e.c);g.drawCircle(e.a,e.b,e.c++)}i>150?i=0:i

You can keep up to date on the contest by searching for #tweetcoding on Twitter!

Akismet – WordPress spam checker

20 10 2008

I’ve been suffering from a ridiculous amount of spam comments recently, and so have started using the Akismet spam checker. Already, I am noticing a massive improvement!

Akismet has correctly marked as spam many messages and has successfully ignored those comments which are in fact valid. When comments are marked as spam, you are able to view these and either delete them, or reinstate the comment (at which point, Akismet learns from its mistakes, thus improving the accuracy over time).

I would thoroughly recommend that anyone experiencing spam issues in their WordPress site should check that the Akismet plugin is installed and enable it immediately! :-)

Spies in TF2

6 09 2008

Just been playing TF2 for the first time and have to say it’s quite good.  Though there is one major issue: Opponent spies allowed in your re-spawning area!  It’s totally cheating!  I’ve just been constantly re-spawning while some delightful fellow blasts my brains out the second I rejoin the game!

I think a change should be put in place so that no enemy is allowed within their opponents’ re-spawn zone.

Back to UT3 me thinks… ;-)

Interhost – Great customer service

20 07 2008

I’ve just requested some Linux hosting from Interhost as it’s about time I started managing the hosting of this domain myself.

So at 2:10pm today (note – it’s a Sunday), I put in my request, and by 2:25pm it was already set up!

That’s 15 minutes on a Sunday afternoon to get my hosting package completely ready with a couple of additional databases.

I felt that deserved a quick blog post just to let people know how good this company seems to be.  It’s also nice that I got a quick confirmation email form a real human being too – nice touch that!

Here’s a link to their site…I would definitely recommend them based on this level of service so far!

Firefox 3 – Issue with dragging

5 07 2008

I’ve recently upgraded to Firefox 3 and have noticed a huge issue which is making me consider switching browsers (something I don’t really want to do).  When you click anywhere in the browser and go to drag, rather than selecting text or dragging the image (as you’d expect), the entire browser window moves.  This means I’m also unable to do simple things such as using the scroll bars!

I’m running Firefox 3 on Mac OS-X, and have never encountered an issue like this prior to the upgrade.  If anyone has any suggestions as to how to resolve this I’d be very grateful!

Help Needed – Kvatch Oblivion gate!

9 06 2008

When I first started Oblivion (playing on the PS3), I realised just how much I love wandering around, doing small quests etc. I put off closing the first Oblivion gate (Kvatch) and instead tried to improve certain skills, carry out sub tasks, improve my sneaking etc.

So now I’m level 3 and thought – let’s go and sort out that Oblivion Gate…

Firstly, those stunted scamps are a right pain! Luckily my Flare spell seems to help kill them. I’ve managed to get up to the tower…so far so good.

And now I’m stuck. In the “Blood Feast”, there’s a fiery pit thing in the first room and 2 stunted scamps (easy to kill when there’s just 1, but 2 are trickier). Then – out of one of the passages to the east/west pops out what I believe to be a Dremora Churl…and it’s game over:

Oblivion - Dremora Churl

This dude seems invincible to all my weapons, he seems to be resistant to fire, and manages to kill me in 2/3 blows. I’ve tried and failed numerous times to kill him!

I’m playing as a wood elf. My available weapons are rather simple/weak: bows, long/short swords, a large hammer etc. I do not have any useful spells (only Flare, or moonshadow – which i can only use once per day).

Suggestions I’ve had from two Oblivion playing mates are:
a) reload from the last save game and practice conjuring beings to help
b) reload from the last save game and acquire a staff which is much more powerful at killing beings than my current measly arsenal!

I’d really like to not reload from the save if possible – so if anyone has any other ideas on how to defeat the above Dremora, please let me know!
